"With Glowing Pride"

11 x 14" Color pencil on sulphite paper. Completed during practice on 3-12-10, this color pencil drawing attempts to capture the childhood joy and adult pride in winning the Olympic Gold Medal in Hockey. Stylistically, I wanted to convey a sense of timelessness and used a softer, but more technically controlled pencil stroke for a nostalgic feel. Pictured are the Blackhawks three gold-medalists: (left to right) Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook.

Hossa's Painting Sketch

Color pencil sketch, approx. 12x15" on drawing paper. I drew this pre-painting sketch during practice over the course of two sessions last week to serve as a study for a painting (to which Olympic themes may be added). The first day of practice was one of Coach Q's 'competitive drill workouts' where the boys build up a good sweat while trying to best each other in skill and strength drills. Hossa's smile is the standout feature here, and I'm happy to tell you that he was pleased with it as well!

Acrylic on canvas, 16 x 20". I've sat at practice and done numerous sketches of Jonathan Toews, but I never got to the portrait painting stage. This image was painted and used at auction for Jon's Charitable golf event the "Sizzlen Summer Golf Tournament". I used acrylic gouache on the large portrait face and standard acrylic on the simplified, stylized action image. My desire was to create a painterly image in the portrait which would still hold up as the subject of the composition competing against an abstract 'storm' in the background and a rich-hued action figure in the foreground.

They Call Him...VERSTEEG!

Something a little different this time! This is actually a color pencil drawing of Kris Versteeg. My fellow Dutchman, Steeger, needed a little different treatment since he comes from the land of Rembrandt and van Gogh. I leaned a little to the wild side myself! For you art students out there, this is on 12 x 18" paper and drawn with Berol scholar pencils and scraped in places with my handy electric eraser. Actually, Steeger wasn't as much drawn, as the paper was drawn to him. Similar to the shroud of Turin, the image slowly manifested itself in the fibers....and they called him, Versteeg!

Originally titled 'Sacrifice', despite his skills, fans usually think of Adam in terms of blocked shots and right jabs-a player who does what it takes for his team. I didn't want to hit viewers over the head (pun intended) with those images, but most of you probably recognize this look when you see it!

I can still remember my early years of listening to the Blackhawks on my folks Grundig majestic radio...I was so impressed with the team of Lloyd Petit and Harvey Wittenberg that I recorded some of the broadcasts and still have them today! My clairvoyant prediction of Harvey's monotone announcement of "one minute to play in the period" amazed many of my first dates at the Chicago Stadium. Here's to you, Harvey!!!
