Congratulations are in order to the Detroit Red Wings on winning another Stanley Cup! Its not popular to say anything good about Detroit if you’re a Chicago fan, and I’ll admit I was hoping the Penguins would force a game seven, but it was primarily because I didn’t want the great hockey to end.
Most Blackhawks fans hate Detroit. They refer to the team and town as ‘Detoilet’, the ‘Wangs’ and so much worse. “Detroit sucks!” has been our favorite chant since the demise of the Minnesota North Stars and Dino. I revert back to my youthful days of playing Sega’s ‘Mutant League Hockey’ that ghoulishly referred to the ‘Detroit Dead Things’ with their star players (at the time) being ‘Paul Eyesareburnt’ and ‘Steve Eyesaregone’. Even now I’m smiling as I recall our own ‘Coach Sputter’ and all-star ‘Jeremy Bonelick’. So wrong on so many levels, but how I miss those simple days!
Blackhawk fans hate the Wings like Bears fans hate the Packers. There’s no small amount of envy involved, after all, they stole our favorite homegrown player and Chili maker! In the final analysis they are what we long to be-champions beloved by their faithful and honored in their city. They are perennial winners who evoke a feeling of pride and hope within their fans. I want that feeling, too. A banner unfurled directly in front of me at the United Center last season declaring, “The Pride Is Back”. I really hope so, because Hawks fans deserve it.
Go Hawks!
